Standards FILE ARCHIVING Why archive? Programmers do the majority of their work on servers, which are routinely backed up. But designers do the majority of their work on workstations, which do not benefit from the same backup schedule. Though the filesize of image files makes it unreasonable to do all design work on a server, certainly some files should be archived. PSDs and FLAs are complex files whose value lies in their easily modifiable nature. The best, and sometimes only way to do quality enhancements and modifications to a site is through the use of these source files. Why use a central location? Vacations, sick days, and messy HDs can make finding key files from other designers difficult. Virus concerns have greatly limited the use of "shares" on employee workstations. With a central location, supervisory personnel will have access to finished PSDs, enabling quality control and standardization possibilities. All in all it allows for a simple, organized archiving system. Folders can be set up by clientcode, much like AMs organize their documents. Where to archive? In your personal folder within \\pokemon\private\James-gfx-archives. What to archive? Anything complex that has a likelihood of needing maintenance in the future: homepage/splash page layouts, navigations, complex collages, etc. File standards for archived media PSDs NEVER flatten Delete all unused/empty layers Place related layers into sets Keep all guides and slices in place Label layers as appropriately as possible FLAs Place related symbols into sets Don't break apart text which does not necessitate it Name all symbols logically (avoid "Tween 10", etc.) Clear library of all unused symbols/objects (ONLY those that will never be needed again) |
